Electronic Resources and Libraries keynote

From the keynote at Electronic Resources & Libraries, Georgia Tech University and Conference Center, Atlanta, GA. The speaker is Rick Luce, Director of Libraries at Emory University.

Looking at the future from the perspective of science. How will life be changed by the rise of computer power? A couple of examples. Zillionics - ubiquitous sensors in bodies and environments, wiki-science - experiments with many scientists collaborating on a paper.

Info technology trends -Cell phones not PC will be the main point for information access. Smart data - context is contained in data.

Libraries

Success = adding value and providing a "compelling" experience. Users looking to "find". We need to evaluate the library experience. Individual staff need to understand how individual pieces fit into the larger puzzle. We must take greater control for serving up content.

Hot data and information issues

eScience - cyberinfrastructure and data curation. Data integration, annotation, sharing, security.

What happens to libraries when suveillance and security is more important the privacy?

Posits that we are in the early stages of returning to a verbal society. Emphasis on verbal communication. Soon will have no need for keyboards. In 2050 will literacy be dead? If so, how will we deliver, organize, store information?

Library 2.0 trends - mash up culture, consumers want to be part of product development process, want personal power in a no wait world.

Why the difference between the library world and the web world? Will our customers be willing to wait on our development cycles? Collaborative filtering to cope with information overload.

Deep vs. shallow infrastructure

Shallow - micro formats, APIs (web world)
Deep - durability, depth, quality of metadata (library world)

Why do we have so many silos in the library standards world? In web world, software is designed to work with any device including ones that haven't been invented yet. E.g. mpeg 21 format, file description works with any device

Critical opportunities for libraries in next 5 years

1. Machines - next generation of readers
2. Data publishing on the grid
3. eScience and data curation
4. Global Workflow
5. Channel editing. Blog with feed (specific scope) e.g. Materials Sience portal. Information specialist edits information provided via these channels. Connecting communities with data.

Focus on customers. How will technology influence user behavior?

It's about integrating everything into one seamless experience.

Initiatives at Emory University Libraries

Southern Spaces What enhanced forms of peer-reviewed scholarship are possible digitally that aren't in print? Once it has been developed, turn resource over to the community.

How do we make our tools more compatible to our users expectations? Visualizing information instead of providing info in text format.


Log analysis for trend prediction - where are reading trails taking us?

Looking at problems collaboratively.

Repositories, Workflow and Data Archiving. Enabling group-to-group interaction in a persistent environment. Supported by the grid, social software, etc.

Scholarly evaluation will go through a revolution similar to scholarly communication.

Customer loyalty measures. How do you measure quality, innovation, brand identity, market share, ability to attract and retain employees, credibility.

Move away from being custodians of information

Technology and information will change so how do we become catalysts for renewal? What can individuals do to help our organizations "thrive in a world of accelerating change"? How do you make continuous renewal part of your team, organization?
