I was just perusing the daily edition of ALA Cognotes, the ALA conference newspaper, for any tidbits to blog. The ILL Discussion Group talked about purchase-on-demand programs (also highlighted at the GOBI user group.) Today is the first time I've heard of this idea.
Essentially, when a book request comes into ILL, it's purchased instead of borrowed. Libraries offering this service are trying to improve customer satisfaction and promote needs-based collection development. Criteria are set up so not all books are automatically purchased.
